I recently read an article that said that American Retired Expats may get their social security benefits canceled if they live overseas for over 6 months. Doe this apply to retirees with SSRV Visas in the Philippines?

Hi John, It's important to separate a few things.

  1. Retirement Benefits (SSI) vs Social Security Disability Insurance Payments (SSDI)- SSDI has a requirement to remain in the United States for a period of time.
  2. Your citizenship - If you are NOT a US citizen and you live outside the USA for 6 months+ then you can get your payments suspended.
  3. Proof of life- the Social Security Administration (SSA) will require you to send a "proof of life form" annually.

If you are talking about Social Security Retirement Benefits in the Philippines, and you are a US citizen, and you can prove you're not dead, then you should be okay.

Cheers, Marco
