WHAT DID CIGNA DO? During the video consultation, the doctor listened to the expat and discussed her symptoms, medical history, drug allergies, and details of other prescribed medicines. The doctor answered several questions to ease the expat's mind and alleviate her concerns.

WHAT WAS THE OUTCOME? The customer felt reassured and more informed about her condition. The advice she received enabled her to book adequate follow-up tests and get the help she needed.

Cigna Medical Evacuation Case Study

WHAT HAPPENED? An expat living abroad in South America was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and admitted to hospital. The family was concerned the local doctor was pushing for heart transplant surgery.

WHAT DID CIGNA DO? A Case Manager contacted the family and arranged for medical repatriation back to the expat's home country. The family and the patient were much more at ease receiving medical care in a country where they better understood the process, treatment options, and language. Their doctor provided the family with a second opinion. Armed with additional information, they decided a heart transplant was unnecessary.

WHAT WAS THE OUTCOME? The patient is back home and recovering in a familiar environment. Their Case Manager keeps in frequent contact to track progress during the treatment plan.

Cigna International Insurance Plan Addon Modules

1 - International Outpatient

The International Outpatient add-on provides additional benefits to Cigna's expat plan to cover outpatient care that doesn't require overnight hospital admission. This add-on typically covers a wide range of medical services received outside of the hospital, such as consultations with general practitioners and specialists, lab tests, and prescription medications. Five examples of what an international outpatient plan might cover:

  1. Doctor Consultations - See a local doctor or specialist for checkups or treatment.
  2. Prescription medications - This covers the cost of outpatient medications prescribed by a doctor.
  3. Diagnostic tests - Including X-rays, MRIs, and blood tests, among others.
  4. Urgent care - This covers unexpected injuries or illnesses that need immediate attention.
  5. Outpatient Rehabilitation - including physiotherapy, osteopathy, and chiropractic treatment

You can read this article Choosing an International Health Plan to understand why outpatient and day care coverage is vital.

2 - International Evacuation & Crisis Assistance Plus

I consider this one of the most critical add-ons offered by Cigna expat insurance, especially for expats who live in remote areas with limited access to a proper healthcare facility or in countries with less developed healthcare systems. The cost of medical evacuation can destroy years of financial planning in one incident.

Infographic showing the transportation cost of medical evacuation that is covered by Cigna expat insurance

Medical evacuations can be financially devastating without emergency cover for transportation cost

Emergency evacuation and medical repatriation ensure that expats receive the proper medical care if their local hospital cannot provide adequate treatment. This add-on pays for emergency transportation to the nearest proper medical facility in case of urgent medical issues, complex medical treatments, serious illness, or injury, even if that hospital is in another country or city. Additionally, this module covers the transport of mortal remains in case of death.

3 - International Health & Wellbeing

A preventative care and wellness plan can be added to cover for screenings, routine checkups, and vaccinations to maintain good health and prevent illnesses. The program also provides access to wellness coaching programs for weight loss, fitness, sleep, and nutrition counseling.

Preventative care is vital for expats living abroad as it ensures they have access to cancer screenings, which can be challenging to obtain in public hospitals in a foreign country. Moreover, preventative care and regular adult physical exams can help avoid costly medical bills arising from untreated health issues.

INSIDER TIP : Included Mental Health Care- Expats can access mental and behavioral health care treatments without this add-on. Cigna Global's Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans already include inpatient, daypatient, or outpatient mental health treatment as part of their standard benefits.

4 - International Vision & Dental

With this optional module, expats can enjoy comprehensive coverage for preventative, routine, and major dental treatments, as well as routine eye exams and expenses for glasses and lenses.

INSIDER TIP : Optional International Dental Care- I rarely buy the optional dental insurance. My policy charges an additional $75 per month for vision and dental cover.

However, dental treatment is highly affordable in most countries I live in. Routine checkups and cleans are seldom more than $25 USD.

What is the cost of a Cigna International Medical Plan?

As a 49 year old male, a Cigna global policy costs $109 per month. However, costs for Cigna International Health Insurance Plans depend on several factors, including your age, the plan tier you choose, the countries you want in your coverage, and the benefits you want to be covered.

The good news is Cigna offers a modularized approach to their healthcare for expats allowing you control over your insurance rates.

screenshot showing online quote of Cigna Global Health Insurance Plan levels

Silver Plan is 44% cheaper than the Gold Level for a 49 year old individual

To start, Cigna offers three main plan tiers—Silver, Gold, and Platinum—each with increasing costs and benefits. You can also save on premiums by choosing a higher deductible or cost-share option.

Additionally, you can add or remove the optional modules to make your Cigna International Health Plan more comprehensive. Focusing only on modules vital to you and your family ensures you only pay for what you need. Lastly, Cigna Expat plans are discounted if you pay quarterly or annually instead of monthly.

INSIDER TIP : Emergency Fund- I almost always use a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). By changing my deductibles and coinsurance, I significantly reduce my insurance rates. However, there is a risk of higher out-of-pocket payments if I need to  make a claim.

I increase my emergency fund to provide a buffer to offset any surprise healthcare costs. You can read more tips on how I reduce expat health insurance costs

Create Your Customized Cigna Expat Insurance Plan

Looking for an international health insurance plan that suits your specific needs? Here are five easy steps to help you choose the right plan:

1

Step 1: Select Your Cigna Core Plan

Select your Cigna Global Health (Silver, Gold, Platinum) level that works for your situation. The Cigna Silver plan has a benefit limit of $1,000,000, while Gold increases the annual limit to $2,000,000. Platinum's annual reimbursement limit is uncapped.

Additionally, choose your coverage location - worldwide coverage including the US or excluding the US. Even if you decide to exclude the US, you'll still receive limited emergency hospitalization benefits if you have an accident while on a brief visit.

2

Step 2: Add Optional Modules

Add optional modules to your plan, such as international outpatient, health and wellbeing, and vision and dental. Each module has deductible options and a benefit maximum.

3

Step 3: Manage Your Premiums

Customize your premiums with various deductible and coinsurance options to fit your budget. Opting for a higher deductible and coinsurance is a cheaper solution to lower your premium, but you'll have to pay more out-of-pocket costs until you reach your deductible and coinsurance limit.

4

Step 4: Chose Payment Options

Finally, choose the frequency you'd like to pay your applicable rate - monthly, quarterly, or annually. Credit and debit card payments or bank wire transfers are available when paying annual amounts upfront.

INSIDER TIP : Lowering Your Cost of Health Care- Cigna offers cheaper rates when you pay your insurance premiums upfront. Quarterly or annual payments save 3% and 10% vs. settling for lower monthly payments.

FAQs: Cigna Global Health Options

Does Cigna expatriate insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Maybe. The answer is not a clear yes or no, as it depends on the specific pre-existing condition and the underwriting process. However, Cigna expat insurance can cover pre-existing conditions, provided the applicant completes an accurate medical questionnaire when applying for the plan.

Cigna may consider your condition as pre-existing if you have sought advice or experienced symptoms before the start date of your plan, regardless of any previous diagnosis. Cigna Global has four options for handling pre-existing conditions.

  1. Minor pre-existing conditions can be covered as any other illness subject to your plan coverage.
  2. Your expat insurance application is approved with an exclusion for your pre-existing condition.
  3. Your Cigna expat health insurance costs will increase, and additional limits specific to your pre-existing condition will be included in your plan.
  4. Your insurance application can be denied entirely.

Do Cigna Core Plans offer global health insurance coverage to older retirees?

Yes. Unlike many other international health plans, Cigna partners with expats long-term. Cigna Global is a guaranteed renewable health insurance plan with no upper age limit. International medical insurance from Cigna is available even for older retirees and seniors

Who can apply for Cigna expat insurance?

Any expats above the minimum age requirement of 18 living outside their home country can apply for Cigna Global expat insurance. Note that Cigna expat plans have geographic limitations, including not being available to expats living in Afghanistan, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, North Korea, Singapore, Sudan, or Syria.

Additionally, Americans living abroad in a US territory cannot apply for expat coverage.

What is the maximum coverage provided by Cigna Expat Insurance?

The annual overall maximum benefit per year depends on the plan cover level. The Cigna Silver plan has a maximum benefit limit of $1,000,000 per person per year. The Gold Plan limit is capped at $2,000,000, while expats on Cigna's Platinum plan have an unlimited plan benefit maximum.

Does my Cigna health plan cover COVID-19 treatment?

Yes. A Cigna health plan covers COVID-19 diagnosis, testing, and treatment if you are not infected when you submit the application form or at the plan start date.

However, if you have long COVID, Cigna may require complete medical underwriting before approving, declining, or excluding any pre-existing medical conditions related to COVID-19.
